Comox Valley Refugee Support Committee successfully sponsored a Syrian family of four. The family is currently settling into the Comox Valley and are very thankful to all who helped get them here through donations. Organizer Val Macdonald comments, "Once the refugees reach Canada, they are no longer refugees. They are permanent residents of Canada and, therefore, newcomers or friends. We do not refer to them as refugees because it brings shame. They did not choose to leave everything and everyone behind like immigrants do. They would prefer to live safely in their own country and only came to Canada as a second choice. Many of the Syrian refugees are highly educated and had good middle class lifestyles, much like our families. What TV shows does not give a clear picture of who these people are so we tend to think of them as "poor and uneducated", adding to their confusion and shame. It is important that your classmates understand this."
