Otters rely on their dense fur for warmth. When their fur becomes oiled, they lose their thermal protection and ability to forage for food, all of which can quickly lead to hypothermia and death. The risk of an oil spill occurring near the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca may increase by over four times with the development of new oil transport facilities in British Columbia,These include the Northern Gateway plan, and the Trans-Mountain pipeline expansion.
